Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery or "Minimal Access Surgery" or key hole surgery is a highly specialized technique of performing surgery of abdomen. Over the last 20 years this minimal access surgery has evolved from Laparoscopic gall bladdder surgery to almost all abdominal surgeries including the weight loss surgeries.

In conventional "open" surgery the surgeon uses a single large incision to enter into the abdomen and deal with the organ involved by the disease , but in Laparoscopic surgery uses three to four ports of 0.5-1cm in size . as a result the patient has Less post operative discomfort since the incisions are much smaller , Quicker recovery time ,Shorter hospital stay , Earlier return to work , Much smaller scars .

Advantages of Laparoscopic Surgery

There are a number of advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure. These include:

  • Reduced haemmorage or bleeding, which reduces the chance of needing a blood trasfusion
  • Smaller incision, which reduces pain and shortens recovery time
  • Results in less post-operative scarring
  • Less pain, leading to lesser medication
  • Although procedure times are usually slightly longer, hospital stay is less, and often with a same day discharge which leads to a faster return to everyday living

Reduced exposure of internal organs to possible external contaminants thereby reduced risk of acquiring infections
